How to Roleplay Well (and Freely)

A passionate roleplayer shares what makes good RP great—and why censorship, rigid rules, and “Gen Alpha lingo” are killing the vibe. Here’s how Xego keeps things real.

Roleplay is supposed to be an escape—a way to dive into alternate worlds, speak through characters, and express yourself freely. But lately, many roleplayers have started to feel like they're walking on eggshells.

Whether you're on apps like Janitor.ai, Character.ai, or new platforms like Xego, you’ve probably seen the tension: censorship, moderation inconsistencies, or even backlash from users who don’t understand the spirit of RP.

One passionate user recently shared a post that resonated deeply with our team. Here’s the gist of what they said—and why we believe it's a conversation worth having.

1. Grammar? Do your best—but don’t sweat it.

Perfect grammar isn’t a requirement. Not everyone speaks English natively, and that’s okay. Use tools like Google Translate or ChatGPT to help you if needed, but don’t let fear of mistakes stop your creativity.

RP is about connection, not perfection.

2. Use real words. Not TikTok slang.

It’s tempting to use made-up words, abbreviations, or meme-speak—but overdoing it kills immersion.

Roleplay thrives on clear, expressive language. Whether you're writing a romantic scene or a battle in a war-torn kingdom, your words need to carry weight. That’s hard to do when everything is “🧍💀slayyy girlboss.”

3. Let characters be real—even when they swear.

Censorship often gets in the way of realism. If your character is a battle-hardened assassin, a rebel soldier, or a broken-hearted ex-lover, they’re not going to talk like a PG-13 cartoon.

Let the dialogue reflect the personality. Sometimes, that means swearing. Sometimes, that means exploring dark themes. It’s part of what makes RP feel authentic.

At Xego, we give you that freedom—as long as it fits the story.

4. Yes, violence can be part of RP. So can spice.

Not all roleplay is rainbows and flirting. Some of the most immersive roleplay deals with intense emotions—grief, conflict, fear, desire.

Violence in a war story? It makes sense. Adult themes in a romance arc? Also valid. What matters is consent, context, and clarity.

And let’s be real: when underage users sneak into mature spaces and complain about mature content—that’s not on you.

We built Xego to be 17+ for a reason. And we’re committed to upholding a space where adults can tell stories without being constantly silenced.

A Note to Mods & Platforms

This post ended with a message for moderators—and honestly, it applies to everyone building platforms for roleplay.

“I'm just trying to point out what you need for a decent roleplay. It’s a really great app and I hate seeing its downfall for something that’s most likely not even your fault...”

We feel that.

That’s why at Xego, we’re listening. We want to build a space where roleplayers feel free—not frustrated. Where creators can shape meaningful experiences without worrying about automated moderation flags every other message.
